Purses: In Syria
Purses, a diptych series of women with their purses (shot in B&W) paired with the content of their purses (in color). The body of work took on an added significance when The State Department invited Ms. Day to lecture, teach and exhibit in Damascus and Aleppo, Syria, in 2003. This program was intended as a cross-cultural exchange between the mutual cultural centers. On this page are the original photographs, along with reactions taken during this extraordinary experience.
Teenagers
An ongoing series depicts American teenagers, in all their weird and wonderous glory. This interest was initially developed during Ms. Day’s work as a camp counselor for the high school group in Burt Lodge at Unitarian Summer Assembly, where she was once a teen. Her interest in what they wear and surround themselves with has gone on to become a larger meditation on youth their mercurial nature.
Collaboration and Education
In 2013, Ms. Day began a joint artistic exploration with some highly qualified school children, their teachers and parents at a Montessori school. Together we made, Modern Community Tree and We Become Space (in three parts). Beginning with photography, the project used pigmentation and collage techniques to add dimension to the 2D quality of photography and elevate it from the surface, ultimately redefining the identity of both photography and family structure.
